As the debate – Tips and Tricks
The first round of QDU place last week, and I am part of a team (which won fortuantly). Seeing that this is a global activity, I felt I had to write some basic tips for discussion, because I know how hard it is to realize when I started. I debated for 5 years and I hope to pass my experience to other country.
I’m not sure that every country has different types of debates, but Australia is developing a system in which three people from each side, to take it, revolves around arguing the point.
(1) – they are always right – no matter what you truly believe, if you want to win, after learning that what you say is right and the opposition has always been a mistake.
(2) – The strong central argument – after each contact point back to their teams. That makes the whole team seem more prepared and get great marks.
(3) – Refuting – if you’ve done wrong, are refuted. If not returned, to refute the case of their teams. If you give an example that is relevant to refute it. Remember, the opposition is always wrong.
(4) – If you need more time, summerize – a good summery not only gets good points, but also increases their time. If you are under time pressure, you lose points and the same happens when you go. Try to find a balance.
(5) – Do not insult the opposition – no matter how much you want, no! If there is something I offend you, make your argument. Do not use personal attacks to win if you want.
